GraphQL, Magento & React
Magento version v2.0 was launched at the end of 2015 with a frontend that seemed outdated right from the release (jQuery, RequireJS, KnockoutJS, LESS).
Since then, Magento has been switching to headless. As part of Magento v2.3 a GraphQL API had been added, expandable through extensions, with which a frontend could be built at random: In the meantime Magento is building a PWA on top of this, but there are also other PWA providers that make a faster, easier frontend possible based on either React or Vue.
Jisse Reitsma explains how GraphQL is at the core of Magento’s switch to headless, showing how a Magento 2 module can modify existing API endpoints or adjust a new API endpoint and how to use such an endpoint within a simple React component.
After this section, the talk goes through advanced scenarios with GraphQL & React: Schema stitching, microservices, Server Side Rendering, and how different e-commerce applications such as Shopware, BigCommerce and Shopify have also gone headless and how this is changing the landscape.
